Alot of people fill the boat up and get out to the gulfstream and troll. This is a great way to fish and I have done it for years. But with the coat of gas going sky high I have went back to a slow drift using a sea-anchor. You get to sit in your chum slick and go with the flow. I put up a kite and some baloon rigs and soon the fun begins. You also get to jig for bottom fish at the same time, and cover alot of ground moving with the current. It is a very relaxing way to fish and is one of the best ways to present a bait, they dangle in the water splashing and can get much attention. Can't wait!!!!!

one thing we do is once we get out to where we are going we will shut one motor down. (boat has twins) not sure how much it saves on gas but we do a lot of bottom fishing too.

how many people shut there motor(s) off while offshore?

LOL I have a inboard 351,just like your truck. Do you leave it running at the mall? If I didn't trust it to re-start, I woun't trust it to take me there.

We shut one down while trolling also. Cuts down on engine hours and also cleans up your spread with less prop wash.

I go out cut the engine off,try and get a good drift over some bottoms holding, throw out livebaits on lightlines, maybe one under a float and bottom fish as I move along,if it to fast I put a drift anchor out, hang a chum bag over the side as well.If theres dolphin around it won't be long before its on,keep some chunks cut up a bucktail tied on in case a cobia or something else comes by boat and carry the bamboo calling card as well.

Same here desert, some reel relaxing fishing not to mention the saving on your fuel. I really like the way it keeps your in your chum slick, I use soaked dogfood in manhaden oil, seems to draw alot of bait up also.

Mix some oatmeal in with the dogfood and menhaden oil, really stays up.

Call me crazy... but I aint going to cut completely off.... No need to invite trouble. And the same thing can be said for .... if you can afford to get out that far, a little bit of fuel used to idle aint gonna kill me either...

We used to chunk for yellowfins that way out of OI, especially in the fall. 5 or 6 lines out just drifting in the current. It used to be a great way to load the boat with yellowfins. You're sitting there, all lines are slack and just when you think it's safe to doze off......WHAM! That is one violent hookup. Much more so that while trolling.

I only turn my engine off if on a constant drift. Most of the time we are pulling up, dropping down, and I use the engine to slow down my drift while dropping.....then work the ledge...hook up...and drift off. All of this is no more than a few minutes saved. I would be more worried of having my starter burn up on me than the engine failing. Either one will leave me stranded. No pull rope on a Yamaha 150... :lmao:

I agree -- I leave my Yamaha 150 running until I get back to the bock unless anchored in the river or ICW. Near shore it runs.
