Council Member Highliner Award Recipient

The public Captain Jimmy Ruhle, owner/operator of the F/V Darana R and five year member of the Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council, was awarded the 2004 National Fisherman’s Highliner of the Year Award.

The Highliner Award was established by National Fisherman in 1975 to “Recognize fishermen for overarching contributions to their industry and to their communities”. Since 1977 three fishermen have been recognized annually by National Fisherman. In even numbered years, east coast fishermen (Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico) are recognized, and in odd numbered years west coast fishermen (including North Pacific) are recognized. Nominations for this recognition are solicited from fishermen’s associations, past highliners and other fishermen. Selections are made by the editors of National Fisherman.

In addition to Jimmy Ruhle being awarded highliner recognition, David Goethal of the F/V Ellen Diane and Anthony Iarocci of F/V Pursuit were also 2004 recipients of the award. In what may be a first of its kind, all three recipients are current members of Regional Fishery Management Councils. David is a member of the New England Fishery Management Council and Anthony is a member of the South Atlantic Council.

Since inception of the award in 1975, fewer than 100 fishermen have received this prestigious recognition. With Jimmy being added to this select group of fishermen, the Mid-Atlantic Council now has three Highliner Award winners serving as members. Other recipients are Larry Simns (1978) an at-large member of the Council from Maryland, and Council Chairman Ricks Savage (1980) Maryland’s obligatory member of the Council.
