Council Seeks Advisory Panel Members – Applications Due November 22, 2004



The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is seeking experienced and knowledgeable members of the public to serve on management advisory panels to provide information and guidance in the development and implementation of fishery management plans. The Advisory Panels are composed of individuals who are engaged in the harvest of, or are knowledgeable and interested in the conservation and management of the fishery or group of fishes to be managed. Members include recreational and commercial fishermen, seafood dealers and processors, conservationists, scientists, and concerned citizens.

The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council is soliciting new applicants for openings on several of its fishery management Advisory Panels (AP). Advisory panel members are appointed by the Council and serve for a three-year period, based on frequency of meetings. As those appointments expire, members currently serving on the AP can reapply for their positions. These seats also become open to new applicants. AP members generally meet no more than once or twice each year and are compensated for travel and per diem expenses for all meetings. Applications are now being solicited for the following positions:

Calico Scallop AP
At-Large – 1 Conservation Seat

Coral AP
1 Commercial Seat

Golden Crab AP
1 At-Large Conservation Seat

Habitat & Environmental Protection AP
SC – 1 Conservation, 1 Commercial
FL – 1 Conservation

King & Spanish Mackerel AP
NC – 1 Recreational, 2 Commercial
GA – 1 Recreational
FL – 3 Commercial
At-Large – 1 Conservation

Rock Shrimp AP
1 At-Large Conservation Seat

Shrimp AP
NC – 1 Commercial
SC – 1 Commercial
FL – 3 Commercial, 1 Commercial/Wholesaler
At-Large, 1 Open and 1 Conservation

Snapper Grouper AP
SC – 1 Recreational, 1 Commercial/Wholesaler
GA – 1 Commercial/Wholesaler
At-Large – 1 Conservation
Wreckfish Sub-Panel – 2 Open Seats

Spiny Lobster AP
At-Large – 1 Conservation Seat


If you are interested in serving as a member on the Council’s Advisory Panels, please submit an application to the Council office. Applications can be obtained by contacting the Council office or online at www.safmc.net.

Advisory panel members will be selected during the next meeting of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council, scheduled for December 6-10, 2004 in Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Applications must be received by November 22, 2004.
