ESA Petition for the Eastern Oyster Withdrawn On January 11, 2005, NOAA Fisheries Service received a petition to list the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) as threatened or endangered under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). NOAA has recently received a letter from the petitioner that officially withdraws this petition. The petitioner’s request has been accepted, and NOAA Fisheries Service has ceased evaluation of the petition. However, in recognition of the importance of this issue, the Biological Review Team will continue with the status review report.
