Excitement Heats Up for 2006 Big Rock!

March 20, 2006 – When billfish competitors begin to register for the 48th Annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, they’ll take their first step toward winning part of a cash purse that’s exceeded $1 million each of the past eight years. Quite a change from the original Big Rock purse of $250 silver dollars!

In 2005, 181 boats fished the waters off Morehead City, North Carolina and competed for a record purse of $1,378,375. Last year lady angler Gigi Wagoner aboard Size Matters based in Ocean City, MD won with a 529 pound blue marlin.

Hundreds of the best tournament fishermen in the world will compete this year in a six-day event complete with daily game-fish prizes, release prizes and the Big Rock Lady Angler Tournament held on Saturday June 10, 2006. Big Rock is a modified release tournament targeting blue marlin, white marlin and sailfish. Gamefish levels include dolphin, tuna and wahoo. And don’t forget the kids! Junior angler medals will given to the most billfish release points and the largest tuna, dolphin, and wahoo. An additional $500 has been added this year to the Release Category that will bring an all-level entry fee to $12,000.

Major Sponsor Outer Banks Outfitters/Boater’s World tops the list of 60 industry leaders who support this world-class event including Hatteras Yachts, Jarrett Bay Boatworks, Randy Bryant Builders, Touchstone Energy Cooperatives of Eastern North Carolina, MTU/Covington Detroit Diesel, Carolina Chevy Dealers ,Rolex/Johnson’s Jewelers and Wachovia/Wachovia Wealth Management.
