FAO’s Committee on Fisheries Adopts Guidelines for “Ecolabelling” of Marine Fish
As reported in a press release from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), efforts to ensure the sustainability of the world’s marine fisheries got a boost earlier this month when the FAO Committee on Fisheries adopted a set of voluntary guidelines for the ecolabelling of fish products. U.S. government staff, including staff from NOAA Fisheries Service, has worked for several years to support the development of these guidelines.
An ecolabel is a tag placed on a product that certifies it was produced in a sustainable, environmentally-friendly way. These tags are a way to help consumers make informed choices about the products they are buying, so that those who wish to can support sustainable fisheries. The new guidelines set out general principles for ecolabelling schemes and establish minimum requirements and criteria for assessing whether an ecolabel should be awarded, consistent with FAO’s Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries.
