Federal Fisheries Managers to Meet in Pawleys Island, SC
The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will meet September 19-24, 2004 in Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The South Atlantic Council is responsible for fisheries management off the coasts of NC, SC, GA and Florida’s East Coast in federal waters, or the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) ranging from 3 to 200 miles offshore. The Council consists of 17 members from the private sector, state, and federal fisheries agencies, and meets quarterly in each of the southeastern states. All meetings are open to the public.
During the meeting week the Council will hold meetings of various committees to address fisheries issues. These meetings begin on Sunday, September 19 with meetings of the Council’s Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) subcommittees. Throughout the management process, the SSC provides a critical review of the scientific information necessary to make management decisions, such as stock assessments and reviews, reports on stock status, socio-economic impacts of management measures, sustainability of fishing practices, and habitat and ecosystem status. Other committee meetings include a joint meeting of the Ecosystem-Based Management Committee and Habitat Committee, Snapper/Grouper Committee, Law Enforcement Committee, and Mackerel Committee.
There will be a joint meeting of the Shrimp Committee and Advisory Panel to review Amendment 6 to the Shrimp Fishery Management Plan. The amendment addresses the requirement of federal permits, use of bycatch reduction devices for the rock shrimp fishery, and bycatch monitoring and assessment for the fishery. Public hearings regarding this amendment were held in July 2004. A final comment period will be held on Friday, September 24 at 9:15 a.m. before the Council takes final action on the amendment.
NOAA Fisheries will hold a recreational fisheries data workshop in conjunction with the Council meeting on Thursday evening, September 23 from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. Designed for the public, the informal workshop will provide up-to-date program information and answer questions about NOAA Fisheries’ recreational data collection program.
