Jones Secures Additional Funding To Dredge Bogue Inlet and New River Inlet

Money will allow both inlets to be dredged twice in Fiscal Year 2005

Washington, D.C.- Third District Representative Walter B. Jones announced today that help is on the way for Eastern North Carolina’s coastal inlets. Jones has been working diligently with the Army Corps of Engineers to secure supplemental funding for additional dredging of Bogue Inlet and New River Inlet, both of which are in his congressional district. As a result of Jones’ efforts, the Corps will allocate an additional $210,000 for work at New River Inlet, and $300,000 for work at Bogue Inlet. The extra money will allow the navigation channels in and around these inlets to be dredged twice in the remaining seven months of Fiscal Year 2005. The Corps will work with stakeholders in the communities surrounding the inlets to determine a timetable for when exactly the dredging will occur. Congressman Mike McIntyre also worked successfully with the Corps to get $370,000 for Carolina Beach Inlet in his district.

“The Corps of Engineers – particularly Colonel Alexander and his staff at the Wilmington District Office – deserve a lot of credit for working with me and the people of Eastern North Carolina to ensure safe navigation for the boaters and fishermen that use these inlets. These waterways are also vital to the state’s economy, and this additional funding will keep these economic engines running,” Jones said.

“As significant as this is, the battle is not yet over. I will continue to work with my colleagues in the North Carolina congressional delegation to insert money for these projects into next year’s budget. In the meantime, I will also continue to work to get the Administration to understand that these projects are too important for them to continue to leave unfunded in future Administration budget requests.”
