BOSTON — Coast Guard emergency crews medically evacuated an injured fisherman near Gloucester Saturday.
A Station Gloucester boat crew was nearby on patrol when they received a call from the Sector Boston Command Center stating the operator aboard the fishing vessel Webb II had suffered a severe hand injury and was requesting medical attention.
The Coast Guard crew diverted the 29-foot Response Boat Small to the scene. They arrived along side the Webb II, transferred the man aboard the small boat and rushed him ashore. He was transferred to an awaiting ambulance crew at the Station Gloucester pier who took him to Massachusetts General Hospital for further treatment.
“A short transit time is always ideal in an emergency,” said Lt. j.g. Dana Grady, an operations unit coordinator at the 1st Coast Guard District Command Center in Boston. "Our boat crew was in an optimal position to respond - and they did so quickly and expertly.”
