Multi-agency search for missing man in Pamlico River, N.C.

WASHINGTON, N.C. – The Coast Guard and other responders are searching for an approximately 70-year-old man Monday, after reports that he fell off his 19-foot Sea Ox into the Pamlico River near Goose Creek State Park, about 10 miles east of Washington.

The crew of the tug Island Girl called Station Hobucken on their marine band VHF radio and reported that they saw the man fall overboard at about 2 p.m. It was reported that the other man aboard the Sea Ox threw him a floatation device, but the man in the water could not hold on and submerged.

An Air Station Elizabeth City helicopter crew aboard an MH-60T Jayhawk deployed to begin searching along with a Station Hobucken 25-foot rescue boat crew, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, North Carolina Marine Patrol, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department, Sydney Dive Team, and two Bath Fire and Rescue boat crews.

The winds were 5-10 knots with 1-foot seas, 72-degree water temperature and 79-degree air temperature. The water depth was 8-12 feet.

An incident command post has been setup at Goose Creek State Park to coordinate the response.
