COMMERCE SECRETARY APPOINTS FISHERY COUNCIL MEMBER
The U.S. Department of Commerce today announced the appointment of Julian M. Pendarvis, a recreational fisherman from Edisto Island, S.C., to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council. Under this appointment, Pendarvis will serve on the Council until Aug. 10, 2007. He replaces Richard Gray Jr., who resigned from the Council in September.
The eight fishery management councils, established by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, prepare fishery management plans for marine fish stocks in their respective geographical areas of responsibility. The management plans are submitted for review to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Marine Fisheries Service and approved by the secretary of commerce. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.
Council members represent diverse fisheries’ interests whose combined knowledge and experience represent commercial and recreational fisheries as well as environmental, academic and other interests from each geographical area concerned. They are selected from nominations submitted by governors from the areas served by the eight councils and are appointed to three-year terms.
NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service is dedicated to protecting and preserving our nation’s living marine resources and their habitat through scientific research, management and enforcement. NOAA Fisheries provides effective stewardship of these resources for the benefit of the nation, supporting coastal communities that depend upon them, and helping to provide safe and healthy seafood to consumers and recreational opportunities for the American public.
NOAA is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through the prediction and research of weather and climate-related events and providing environmental stewardship of the nation’s coastal and marine resources.
