New Members Appointed to Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee


Last week, Secretary Gutierrez appointed eight new individuals to serve on the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee (MAFAC), the Committee established in 1971 to advise the Secretary of Commerce on all living marine resource matters under the jurisdiction of the Department of Commerce. Initiated in August, the solicitation for nominations resulted in 28 names with diverse expertise from around the country, an unprecedented level of interest. Filling eight vacancies pending since September, these individuals will join 13 existing members and serve for a period of three years. The following individuals were appointed:




Bill Dewey, Taylor Shellfish Company, Shelton, Washington


James Donofrio, Recreational Fishing Alliance, New Gretna, New Jersey


Catherine Foy, Aleutians East Borough, Steller Sea Lion Project, Alaska


Steve Joner, Makah Fisheries Management, Makah Tribe, Neah Bay, Washington


Dorothy Lowman, Natural Resource Consultant, Portland, Oregon


Heather McCarty, McCarty & Associates, Juneau, Alaska


Mary Beth Nickell-Tooley, East Coast Pelagic Association


Tom Raftican, United Anglers of Southern California
