In addition to being a traditional American pastime, salt-water recreational fishing has proven to be a major economic driver, creating 350,000 jobs nationwide. The 13 million American marine recreational anglers represent one of NOAA’s largest constituencies. With their partnership, NOAA plans to implement the following goals to protect, restore, and manage the use of coastal and oceanic resources through an ecosystem approach to management: to improve the science and management of recreational species and their habitats, to keep anglers informed about and involved in the management process, and to promote marine stewardship.

With the advice and counsel of its many recreational and fishing partners, NOAA has developed a
strategic plan that defines a common vision for the future of recreational fisheries and a strategy to achieve that vision. Assistant Administrator for Fisheries, Dr. Bill Hogarth and recreational fishing leaders made the announcement on February 17 at the Miami Boat Show, the site of a pledge last year by government officials to develop the strategy.In addition to being a traditional American pastime, salt-water recreational fishing has proven to be a major economic driver, creating 350,000 jobs nationwide.
