NOAA AWARDS $1.4 MILLION TO SOUTH CAROLINA SEA GRANT The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration today awarded $1.4 million today to the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium to further its mission of coastal environmental stewardship, education, and community involvement. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Dept. of Commerce. “This money will ensure that South Carolina Sea Grant will continue to meet the needs of the people of South Carolina and help NOAA achieve its coastal goals in that state,” said retired Navy Vice. Adm.
The grant was presented by Senator Jim W. DeMint and Congressman Henry E. Brown, Jr. to Rick DeVoe, S.C. Sea Grant director, during a noontime ceremony at South Carolina Sea Grant offices in Charleston.
The South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium seeks a balanced approach to research, education and extension programs that ensures that coastal and marine resource problems are thoroughly understood and rigorously researched and that the results are delivered in a timely and unbiased fashion to marine and coastal resource managers and users.
Some of the research, education, and extension efforts planned for this year include studies of shoreline change as a result of coastal erosion; development of marine science curriculum for middle school students; the study of freshwater wetlands and the ecological function and management alternatives for these wetlands; the study of the effectiveness of alternatives for managing non point source pollution in storm water; and development of milestones to measure the effectiveness of oyster restoration efforts in the mid-Atlantic.
The Commerce Department’s NOAA is dedicated to enhancing economic security and national safety through research to better understand atmospheric and climate variability and to manage wisely our nation’s coastal and marine resources.
