NOAA Releases Coastal Population Trend Report
Population Trends Along the Coastal United States: 1980-2008, (PDF) a report that presents an overview of coastal population trends from 1980 to 2003 and the projected change in coastal population by 2008. This report details the ever-increasing movement of the U.S. population to coastal counties. Fifty-three percent of the nation’s population currently lives on just 17 percent of the total land area of the lower 48-states. Projections are for the U.S. coastal population to increase by more than seven million people by 2008, and by 12 million in 2015.
Coastal areas in the U.S. are home to a wealth of natural and economic resources and include some of the most developed areas in the nation. Although population increases and coastal development produce numerous economic benefits, they also may result in the loss of critical habitat, green space, and biodiversity. The report provides coastal resource managers and stakeholders with information to enhance coastal management decision-making. Click here to read the NOAA news release.
