North Carolina Coast Guardsmen to Re-Visit Service’s Roots Saturday PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Coast Guard members from Stations Oregon Inlet, Hatteras Inlet, and Air Station Elizabeth City, N.C., are scheduled to participate in the American Heroes Day Celebration at the Chicamacomico Life Saving Station Historic Site on Hatteras Island, Saturday Sept. 9. The event will start with a Coast Guard search and rescue helicopter/boat demonstration at 10 a.m. followed by two beach apparatus drills featuring rescue equipment commonly used at U.S. Lifesaving Service Stations from the late 1800’s to the 1950’s at 11a.m. and 2 p.m. The drills will include the firing of a Lyle gun, a small cannon used to shoot a weighted projectile with a lifeline attached to ships in distress close to the coast, and the use of a breeches buoy, a harness that is attached to the line and used to transfer persons in distress from ship to shore.
