Notice is hereby given that the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission Shellfish Advisory Committee will meet on Monday, September 13, 2004 at 6:00 p.m. The meeting will be held at the C-MAST Building, 303 College Circle, Room 305, Morehead City, NC. The C-MAST facility is located on the campus of Carteret Community College, approximately 1/8 mile west of the Civic Center.
The MFC Shellfish Committee will discuss the Oyster Restoration Plan being coordinated by the North Carolina Coastal Federation. The Federation is drafting a plan to help restore oysters. Discussion should focus on how that plan can be coordinated with the Oyster Fishery Management Plan (FMP) and the involvement of the MFC Shellfish Committee.
The Division will present a proposed amendment to the Oyster FMP that addresses restrictions on oyster dredge weights and other harvest measures in the bays of northern and western Pamlico Sound. The Shellfish Committee endorsed an amendment at their last meeting and the MFC approved proceeding with an amendment that reflected the Shellfish Committee’s advice. Maps will be provided at the meeting. The Committee will need to approve draft language so the process can move forward.
The Committee will receive an update on legislation regarding the Oyster and Clam FMP’s. Attached is the legislation that passed.
The Committee will also receive an update from DMF on the Under-Dock Oyster Culture Pilot Project. Members of the Committee will receive an update on oyster sanctuaries
