Offshore, the Tuna Haul is Both Good and Early
March 08, 2005 – It might seem a little early, but the offshore fishing season has gotten off to a good start on Hatteras Island.
When weather permits, charter boats have been making excellent hauls of yellowfin tuna. There have even been good numbers of wahoo mixed in and a blue marlin a couple of weeks ago.
It might be a little earlier than usual, but we should be getting some fish this time of year, said Dan Oden, whose family owns Odens Dock at Hatteras Inlet. Unfortunately, not a lot of people realize how good fishing can be this time of year. Its a good time to be here.
Oden said most yellowfin are weighing 20 to 35 pounds. Good numbers of footballs tuna smaller than 20 pounds also are being encountered. Wahoo numbers are good, but the fish arent huge like they were last year. Dolphin have yet to arrive, but they wont be far behind.
Oden said anglers are journeying about 25 miles offshore to the edge of the Gulf Stream to find fish.
Last weeks gusty winds put trips on hold.
But weve got boats back out today, Oden said Friday. It could be a very good couple of days with nice weather.
