Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club
Swansboro, N.C. 1/31/05, 3:00 PM.
The Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club home based in Swansboro, NC. is sponsoring a Swansboro/Bogue Inlet Town Meeting on Thursday, March 3rd, 7:00 PM at the Rotary Civic Center on Rte. 24, Swansboro, NC.
The meeting is being held to advise elected officials of the lack of funding to dredge Bogue Inlet in 2005, to secure funding for 2006, and the economic impact the closing of Bogue Inlet will have on the community. Scott Chadwick, Chairman of the Swansboro Chamber of Commerce Government Action Committee will present an Economic Impact Study at the Town Meeting.
The Town of Emerald Isle has funded a new Bogue Inlet for $9 million. It will be 1.2 miles long, 15 feet deep, and will be relocated about 500 yards west of the its present location. It cost about $1 million dollars annually to dredge the entire length of Bogue Inlet. From 1967 to 2004 the annual budget for the Corps of Engineers to dredge Bogue Inlet ranged from $490,000 to $1.2 million.
The Connector Channel is 2 miles long and runs from Intercoastal Waterway (ICW) to the New Bogue Inlet. There are no funds to dredge the Connector Channel in 2005. We will have a new Inlet, but wont be able to get to it. The earliest the Connector can be dredge if there is funding for 2006 will be October 1, 2005. There are no funds to dredge the Connector between now and Ocotober 1st.
The Coast Guard has pulled the bouys in 4 N. C. Inlets that have reached 4 feet in depth. We can expect the same will happen to the Connector which is now 5 feet deep.
The Federal Budget will be opened on 2/7/05 and at that time we will learn if there is any funding to dredge the New Bogue Inlet in 2006 and also the Connector Channel. The general consensus is if there were no funds for dredging in 2005, there wont be any funds for dredging in 2006.
Invited to the Town Meeting on January 20th were the two U. S. Senators, our U. S. Congressman, our NC State Senator, NC Representatives, Onslow County Commissioners, Mayors of Swansboro and Emerald Isle.
U. S. Congressman Walter Jones declined the invitation.
Accepting to attend: U. S. Senator Elizabeth Dole (Staffer), NC Representatives George Cleveland, Robert Grady, Russell Tucker, Onslow County Commisioner Paul Buchanan, and Greg Rudolph-Carteret County Director of Beach Preservation.
