Proposed Rule Published for Vermilion Snapper Rebuilding Plan This proposed rule would establish new management measures as part of a
1) An increase in the minimum size limit from 10″ to 11″ total length;
2) a bag limit of 10 vermilion snapper within the 20-reef fish aggregate bag limit. This action, with the increase in minimum size limit, would achieve approximately a 21% reduction for the recreational fishery; and
3) a closed commercial season from April 22 – May 31 each year. The closed season, with the increased minimum size limit, would achieve approximately a 26% harvest reduction for the commercial fishery.

This proposed rule would establish new management measures as part of a
rebuilding plan for vermilion snapper. The allowable harvest for the first 4-year interval starting in 2005 is 1.475 million pounds, roughly a 25% reduction. Measures to accomplish this reduction include:1) An increase in the minimum size limit from 10″ to 11″ total length;
2) a bag limit of 10 vermilion snapper within the 20-reef fish aggregate bag limit. This action, with the increase in minimum size limit, would achieve approximately a 21% reduction for the recreational fishery; and
3) a closed commercial season from April 22 – May 31 each year. The closed season, with the increased minimum size limit, would achieve approximately a 26% harvest reduction for the commercial fishery.
