Public Hearings Scheduled for the Atlantic Mackerel Fishery
A series of public hearings will be held by federal fishery managers to solicit input on management options included in Amendment 15 to the Fishery Management Plan for Coastal Migratory Pelagics (mackerels). The Amendment includes options regarding the current moratorium on the issuance of commercial king mackerel permits and alternatives for limiting access in the king mackerel fishery in the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. The commercial permit moratorium is scheduled to expire on October 15, 2005. The Council is asking for public comment on whether the current moratorium should be extended or allowed to expire. In addition, the Amendment includes options addressing possible changes to the fishing year for both king mackerel and Spanish mackerel in the Atlantic.
King and Spanish mackerel stocks migrate between council jurisdictions and are managed jointly by the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council in cooperation with the Mid-Atlantic Council.
