Scientific and Statistical Committee Meetings Scheduled May 17-19



The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council will hold a meeting of its Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC) and the Biological Assessment Sub-Committee of the SSC in Charleston, South Carolina beginning on May 17, 2004. The Assessment Sub-Committee will meet from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on May 17 and 18. The full SSC will meet from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, 2004. (See below for full meeting agendas.)

Throughout the management process, the SSC provides expert scientific and technical advice to ensure that the Council’s plans and amendments are based on the best scientific information available. The Council’s SSC is composed of experts in the biological, statistical, economic, social, and other relevant disciplines from federal, state, and private scientific communities who are knowledgeable in the technical aspects of fisheries in the South Atlantic.

The SSC Biological Assessment Sub-Committee will meet to prepare recommendations for presentation to the full SSC addressing recent SEDAR (Southeast Data, Assessment, and Review) stock assessments for the following species:

yellowtail snapper
goliath grouper
hogfish
king mackerel

The Sub-Committee and full SSC will provide their determinations on the stock assessments, including the following: certify the assessments are based upon best available data/science and are adequate for management, develop advice on the magnitude and direction of actions(s) required, interpret the assessment results and provide clearly understood conclusions, develop guidelines for the Council on assessment needs and resources to complete recommendations, and review the current SEDAR Process and offer recommendations.
