Search suspended for missing Coast Guardsman


CHARLESTON, S.C. – The multi-agency search for a missing Coast Guardsman in the Savannah River was suspended at 9 p.m. tonight.


Petty Officer 2nd Class Dallas Scott, 29, from Burlington, Iowa, is a damage controlman aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Gallatin, a 378-foot cutter homeported in Charleston. Scott was discovered missing after his friend, Traci K. Miller, 23, of Elk Grove, Calif., was pulled from the river at about 1:30 last night and told police that Scott may have entered the water.


Rescue crews searched the shoreline and Savannah River after articles of clothing matching the description of Scott’s were discovered near the water. Agencies involved in the search included the Coast Guard, Coast Guard Auxiliary, and Chatham County Marine Patrol, Police Department, and Dive Team.


Miller, who is a seaman stationed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Dallas, a 378-foot cutter also homeported in Charleston, was treated at Memorial Health University for minor injuries and released this afternoon.
