A Senate Commerce Committee press release said that the bill ” contains provisions that would help improve international fishery management and conservation compliance, with an emphasis on strengthening controls on illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and ensuring other nations provide comparable protections to populations of living marine resources at risk from high seas fishing activities.” National Marine Fisheries Service Office of Sustainable Fisheries Director Jack Dunnigan testified at a November 16 th Committee hearing on proposals to update the current law.
Administration Officials Brief Senate Staff on Top Manguson Priorities: On December 8th, NOAA Fisheries Assistant Administration Dr. Bill Hogarth, along with representatives from the White House Council on Environmental Quality, the White House Council of Economic Advisors, and the Departments of Justice and Commerce, briefed Senate Commerce Committee staff on the Administration’s most significant priorities for S 2012. Dr. Hogarth reviewed Administration’s priorities for managing overfishing, quota programs, enforcement, and the ecosystem approaches to management.
