Study on Gag Grouper Seeks Help from Commercial Fishermen During March and April The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) and NOAA Fisheries Service are conducting a life history study on gag grouper (Mycteroperca microlepis). Biological samples are needed during the spawning season closure in March and April. Eight fishermen will be selected to participate in this cooperative research by providing samples of whole fish. Since gag grouper cannot be sold during a closed season, SCDNR will pay $3.75/lb for whole gag. The fish may be landed only in specific counties in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida.
