Two Canadian citizens rescued after sailboat runs aground

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Coast Guard Stations Charleston and Georgetown along with Air Facility Charleston crews coordinated efforts to rescue two Canadian citizens after their 38-foot sailboat grounded near the Charleston Jetties in the vicinity of Dynamite Hold about 1:57 p.m. today.


Pierre Desrosiers, 54 and Suzanne Desrosiers, 54 of Montreal used their VHF radio to hail the Coast Guard on channel 16, the international hailing and distress frequency.


Three Coast Guard rescue boat crews and an HH-65 Dolphin helicopter rescue crew were dispatched and located the sailing vessel Parbleu’ grounded near the jetties. Due to shallow water the Station Charleston boat crews couldn’t maneuver their vessels close enough to rescue the Desrosiers’. The rescue swimmer in the Dolphin helicopter was then lowered to the water where he instructed the Desrosiers’ to proceed into their sailboat’s dingy and pulled the dingy out to the Station Charleston 47-foot rescue boat crew.


The Desrosiers’ are reported to be in good condition and were taken to the Coast Guard Base in Charleston about 4:05 p.m. today.


Tow Boat US is going to attempt to salvage the grounded sailboat.
