U.S. Coast Guard Produces New Safety Brochure Children and Personal Watercraft The U.S. Coast Guard’s Office of Boating Safety has recently produced a new safety brochure titled “Children and Personal Watercraft” that is now available to the public. This brochure places the essential information that parents and/or adult supervisors of children need to know before they operate a personal watercraft (PWC), at their fingertips. Whether you own, rent, or borrow a PWC, this brochure offers readers basic information about who can ride/operate a PWC, helpful tips and advice on how to get PWC education, safe operation of PWCs, national statistics regarding the usage of PWCs, and web site links to boating safety organizations that offer additional information on what parents and guardians should know before they let children use a PWC. Phil Cappel, Chief of the Recreational Boating Product Assurance Division of the Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety said, “Discussions for such a brochure came about at a National Boating Safety Advisory Council (NBSAC) meeting and the Coast Guard turned to the American Boat & Yacht Council (ABYC) to develop and circulate a draft of the brochure to gain consensus from all involved parties. If this brochure can save the life of just one child it will make it all worthwhile”. Mrs. Nita Boles, a consumer advocate and member of the Coalition of Parents and Families for Personal Watercraft Safety said, “Just as childhood diseases once devastated children and youth, sometimes prematurely ending lives or causing lasting disability, preventable Personal Watercraft accidents are plaguing the youth of America. We applaud the efforts of the Coast Guard Office of Boating Safety, the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators, the American Boat & Yacht Council, and the Personal Watercraft Industry Association for their efforts in producing a brochure that contains important information for adults who rent, borrow, or purchase PWC with the intent of enjoying them with their youth,” stated Boles. Brochures may be ordered in boxes of 1500 from the Office of Boating Safety at (202) 267-6717 or from the National Safe Boating Council at http://www.art4use.com/05campaign-site/freeresources.htm in packs of 250.
