U.S. COAST GUARD SEARCHING FOR MISSING CREWMEMBER OF CAPSIZED BARGE; 2 CREWMEMBERS RESCUED

NEW ORLEANS – U.S. Coast Guard rescue crews are searching today for one crewmember who was reported missing from a capsized barge in the Pascagoula Ship Channel.

Rescue crews from U.S. Coast Guard Station Pascagoula, Miss., U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Training Center (ATC) Mobile, Ala., and U.S. Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans, in conjunction with two boatcrews from Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, are searching for the missing crewmember about two miles south of Pascagoula.

U.S. Coast Guard Group Mobile received the report at about 1:42 p.m. of the 35-foot barge carrying dredging materials capsizing and launched an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter from ATC Mobile and two small boats from Station Pascagoula to respond.

Two of the crewmembers were rescued by one of the small boats and transferred to an awaiting ambulance crew.

At the time of the accident the barge, owned by Bean Dredging, was being pushed by the tug Delta Hawk, owned by Delta Towing.

The Pascagoula Ship Channel is closed to vessel traffic while dive operations commence.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by U.S. Coast Guard Marine Safety Office Mobile.
