USCG Finds Distressed Mariners

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – The Coast Guard found four people in a life raft approximately 60 miles southeast of Bermuda today at approximately 6:15 p.m.

The Coast Guard Rescue Coordination Center in Portsmouth received a signal from an emergency position indicating radio beacon at about 10 a.m. from the pleasure craft Emilen II, a Canadian registered 43-foot sailing vessel.

Rescue Coordination Center Bermuda took the lead for the search and rescue mission, but RCC Portsmouth diverted a Coast Guard rescue C-130 from Air Station Clearwater, Fla., from a marine safety mission to assist in the search efforts and assisted RCC Bermuda throughout the day. Meanwhile, RCC Bermuda called on the merchant vessel Yeoman Brook, a 900-foot Liberian flagged ship, to assist in the search.

The rescue plane arrived at 3:40 p.m. and found a debris field in the area where the EPIRB signal originated from. After searching approximately two hours, the plane found four people in a life raft.

The Yeoman Brook has recovered the four people, but their condition is unknown.

Weather conditions in the area are extreme with 40 knot winds and 18-foot seas.
