Have any of you ever hunted on public dove fields? I found two that are very close to my house in Durham County and I am tempted to take my boys out there this season but have concerns about hunting across / around from people I do not know! Anybody have any experience with this? I assume they get very crowded?

I've not ever had a problem. it' all about spacing distance. have them wear glasses in case someone rains lead on them

well my experience would be dove hunting is a lot safer than deer hunting, 7 1/2 shot doesn't go or hurt like 30/06 or 308

Agreed, but the dove fields are small and circular. How do you keep people from shooting at each-other?

people don't actually shoot at each other, but they do get caught up in the moment and level a shot or two lower than they should, but even at that, lead stings a little, you will never ever keep from getting rained on a little in a crowded dove field.

Try one of the shooting preserve or gun clubs within easy drive time. I have taken my friends and family (started my son started shooting a 8yrs) several times and never had a worry about low shooters. Prices are very reasonable, at least they used to be. Most have a clays course also, some great fun for all!

If anyone has a big problem with being hit with a little lead I would recommend skipping opening day. You WILL get rained on at some point and unfortunately folks get carried away sometimes with the low flyers and from personal experience it stings pretty good.

I've been to several dove shoots like that and they do get crowded..but most of the time you dont have to worry about being shot etc. The only thong that scares me the most about the whole thing is someone shooting at a low bird. Just be aware of your surroundings and try not to let people get too close to you.
