I haven't been fishing in over 20 years and would like to get back into it. I am looking for some advice on which baitcasting reel I should get. I am interested in going surf shark fishing with some buddies off the Carolina coast. Need some good sound advice on tackle and gear, especially reels. Thanks in advance!!

I like the Seigler SM for surf casting. If you know what you are doing, its an outstanding reel but it is expensive. Sending the reel in for service is not expensive at all and if you put notes in with your service request, the repair guy can tune the reel to your liking. The lifetime warranty makes it worth it, though I am a bit biased. I used to work there and they got a good crew there. School had to come first. I have thrown avetts and they are good as well as well as any pen squall 15 or comparable reel. PM me and I'll get you some good advice on gear given a budget.

Go into your local tackle store and get the biggest spinning reel you can afford, have them load it up with 50lb braid. Tie on a mono shock leader, enough so you have mono on the reel when you're casting. Wire leaders, big hook, smelly baits, case of beer.
