Fellas, a buddy of mine came up for a weekend and got his first deer. Had it processed here locally, now it's time to send it to him. Any tips? Best way to send it? It's going to St Pete beach florida.

Thanks in advance

It's gonna be expensive. You may already know that.

When I was guiding and processing in Texas, we shipped via UPS using heavy, styrofoam boxes and ice packs made specifically for the purpose. I expect you could find them on the interweb, or see if your processor has them available. Make sure the meat is solidly frozen.

Last time I checked, the carriers will NOT insure meat products, so you'll want to coordinate with your buddy to make sure someone will be home to receive the shipment. Send it on a Monday or Tuesday to make sure it doesn't get hung up over the weekend.

Wish I could offer more specifics, but it's been a little while.

Thanks for the input. I've already told him between the trip up here, buying license, shipping, etc. That is will be the most expensive deer meat in the world!

Have you considered having your buddy drive 1/2 way and meet at a designated spot? That way, it's a doable 5-6 hr. drive one way for each of you. Even with an overnight say, it would likely be less than commercial shipping.

Just a thought...……..

Might want to check on importing deer [meat] into Florida. Don't know if Florida does, but some states have a problem with importing potential CWD ...

Good point.

Transporting boned out meat is generally not a problem, however; most states now prohibit shipping anything with spinal fluid (neck bones, bone-in roasts, etc.). The exception is a cleaned skull (European mount or skull cap), or of course, a finished mount.

shipping with dry ice can lead to problems with transport. Make sure it's declared and whoever accepts is aware of it. Sometimes shippers won't take it.

I'm not sure exactly why they're afraid of it, but I think it has something to do with the fact that as dry ice sublimes (goes from solid to gas) it has the potential to build up pressure in a tightly sealed contained and can lead to an explosion (not a flammable explosion, just a bursting of the package). Additionally - potential suffocation hazard as well, but it'd take a lot of dry ice to cause that.

Anyway - just be aware - schlepping a couple bricks of dry ice in might lead to problems with being able to ship it.

Won't argue about above points , but there are several companies that ship vie; (mostly UPS) ton of meat ,ect , ect packed in bricks of dry ice in styrofoam coolers.. The issue of wild meat and its legal preparations is another question on a case by case basis.... just sayin !!!

FedEx Express can do it (assuming deer meat is legal to ship which I think it is ..?!...). (Be mindful that it's peak season so if you choose Ground services some of those drivers are seeing 200-400+ stops a day now through Christmas). You'll need the dry ice DG label and a couple other paperwork/markings attached. Have him use the tracking feature and be home to accept it or have it held on site to pick up (so it's not sitting outside all day in the sun). http://www.fedex.com/downloads/jp_english/packagingtips/dryice_jobaid.pdf
