I support the gill net ban, but have no idea what side the 'We R All Liberal' TV station will take.

No one knows what will be said/shown in the documentary. WRAL has presented both sides to every other story in the past. If they do the same, as expected, this time it will show statistics/facts on the side of the fish and nothing to compare on the side of the large mesh gillnets.

Oh yes. And they get worse by the day! They can't even do weather anymore without pitching global warming, climate change, or whatever it is called now.

Rep. Bob Steinburg
Born in Oswego, New York, and now a political terrorist here in our state. He's holding our fishery hostage for his own political, and surely financial gains. Guess what Rep. Steinburg??? Most voters aren't commercial fisherman.

I am always afraid of the "slant" the media will put on the facts, but overall it seemed pretty balanced. They gave both sides of the story, but really facts are facts. I don't think any reasonable person believes people fishing with a hook and line are doing the most damage.

Every time I hear "It's all I've ever known" as justification for turning a blind eye to the rape of our public resources, I'm assured that us recreational fishermen are on the right side of this battle.
What really scares me is the one old guy who says "its God's will" for the fishery to be depleted in Pamlico Sound. I think he needs to go back and read his Bible. I think this applies to fish too....

Well November is the time to start replacing the 13 names on the list that stopped the last vote. Now is the time to send a very clear message to the 13 names on that list, get out there and vote.

I watched this documentary. I found it informative. All I can say is progress starts from the top down. And when the top utters "I don't know how, I don't know why" as many times as I heard it last night it is very disturbing.

I doubt the WRAL piece changed many minds on either side.
Hopefully enough average NC residents saw it to take a stand on nets, and get them banned ASAP.
I too support the ban on all gil nets in inshore waters asap.

You can say that again! Ineptitude at the top. I found it interesting that he mentioned that banning gill nets in other states failed to produce results, even when by all accounts it most definitely has.

I could very easily be wrong, but I bet not many "average NC residents" watched it. I just don't see people that don't fish bothering to watch it. I'm afraid this will fall into the "well, I don't have a dog in this fight" category.

Or the "what's in it for me?" category. I have very low expectations that our feckless state government will get this right.

That's your opinion, and you're certainly entitled to it, but I thought they gave about equal time to commercial fishermen, recreational fishermen, and the facts of the situation (I.e. how trawls and gill nets work).
I suppose they were supposed to have made a 60 minute public service announcement heralding the virtues of the commercial fishing industry for you guys to not feel slighted.

Would sportsmen have so much animosity toward commercial fishermen and seafood consumers if they could catch more fish and had higher limits?

Sportsmen are concerned for the future of the resources. Animosity, at least from my point of view, comes from the hijacking of a public resource by legislators and bureaucrats who don't have the interests of the electorate in mind, and the refusal of commercial fishermen (at least the ones who are most vocal on this forum) to accept the first hand accounts“If you come across a bird's nest in any tree or on the ground, with young ones or eggs and the mother sitting on the young or on the eggs, you shall not take the mother with the young from recreational fisherman who disagree with their assertion that "everything is fine".
I for one would be happy to give up fish on our creel limit or increase minimum length, but its not going to make any difference if your industry is still gill netting and trawling in the fish's nursery habitats. The catch data clearly illustrates that.
And Chris, let us not fool ourselves here. The only concern your industry has for the "seafood consumer" is with their money.

I think "the truth" portion of the documentary was the explanation of the fishing methods and gear, and the actual recordings and facts from the NCDMF hearings. The rest of the show was two sides of an issue (i.e. opinions).
I think you may be confusing the "truth" with your "opinion".

lets not forget that Louisiana has some of the best recreational fishing in the Country and also has about 10x the number of shrimp trawlers along with probably 10x the bycatch. Now someone out there with all the brains pleaser tell us why that is so? Louisiana still allows gill netting for mullet and pompano but is banned on other species.
Still agree that NC flounder netters are catching too many immature southern flounder and that also applies to recs but then again the scientist over at the NC DMF once told the advisory committees that if we go with a 14 to 15 inch min for flounder it would stop this. Of course those scientist have been proven wrong and now the official min size should be raised to 16 inches or larger to keep from fishing on mostly immature flounder. have they got it right this time? You all tell me. I think Virginia has increased their min size to 17 or is it 18 on flounder and suppose it will not be long before the DMF is demanding that NC go to those min as well.

How much of the seafood consumed is coming from NC internal waters. You cannot find NC caught seafood very easily
Nearly all (well over 90%) of all seafood consumed in this country is imported unfortunately.
NC internal water fishing should be far better than it is. I don't have the answers but in my experience in both commercial and recreational fishing, there is no doubt in my mind that shrimp trawling in our internal waters is causing a tremendous negative impact on the stock status of spots and croakers because when I did it the by-catch was almost exclusively spot and croaker. I never once saw a trout and the flounder were all tiny and mostly returned alive (pulled a small net in Bogue sound). The few I caught that were legal sized were kept of course.
Gill netting in the tiny creeks is not helping matters but that gear is selective based on the size of the fish, not the species. I still don't understand netting mullet for their roe, that flies in the face of good resource management but I guess their populations are fine with the current management in place. Reminds me of harvesting sponge crabs, it just doesn't make sense.
There are many commercial fisheries that don't make sense to me and none as bad as mechanical clamming due to the bottom destruction and flooding of the market putting the manual clammers out of business but that is a different conversation.
I thought the WRAL piece presented both sides pretty well. One thing they should have addressed though is the massive number of recreational fishermen in this state, especially when talking about spots. You can't navigate the ICW each fall trying to get through the spot yachts keeping every fish that they catch. South Carolina has implemented a 50 fish aggregate limit for spot/croaker/sea mullet and I think NC should do the same thing.
Spots are getting hammered up north as they are great striper bait. Commercial operations are selling them as live bait at something crazy like $1 - $2 EACH. Those that make the migration south are hammered at every stop along their way.
Anyway, that is my two cents worth.

They "gets" to buy seafood by a commercial fisherman catching one, and bringing it to market. We are trying to save you from yourself and your short-sightedness. If you continue to fish every species to extinction, no one will have domestic seafood, and you will be forced to find a new way to make a living.

X2 on the aggregate limit for spots and croaker. And we can do without the recreational gill nets as well. But as I've said many times, it won't do a lick of good until you address the side of the equation where the majority of fish are taken or killed as bycatch, and that is by commercial fishing.
