Greetings All,
I have a new feature coming to both ReefCast and The SEECast.
Some of you may know....A gentleman died in a boating accident in Carolina Beach Inlet a few weeks ago. You may NOT know that I was involved after the fact.
His death was the result of a very rough Inlet.
I know how to forecast the inlet conditions....and the times they will be effected.
My question to you as an end user are.....
1. How would you like me to display this information?
2. Where would you like me to display this information?
3. What format would you like it in? (An Icon....Click here for more kind of thing)
4. How can I put this IN YOUR FACE without be obnoxious!
At the moment we are talking about if the inlet will be rough in the next X number of days....We will display an icon on the map over the effected inlets. You would click on the icon and open a dialog box that would tell you the times to stay the hell out of the inlet.
PLEASE......PLEASE put some thought into this.
PLEASE.....PLEASE give me useful feedback.

Dave, that sounds incredible. I think the icon over the inlet is perfect. Click on it and get the warning, pretty simple. Thanks

if there was a blip in reefcast or something that could highlight it.
When I use reefcast, I usually click in the general vicinity of where I want to go but don't worry about it spot on. Fishing off Hatteras? I'll click at the rockpile and 280 rocks and see if any significant difference. Going off MHC? I'll click due south and then east of the shoals. Going off Topsail - I just click like 20 miles out to the SE. I *never* click in the inlets or near shore because it's my understanding reefcast doesn't work in water <60' deep. So to that effect - if it was possible to either put a dot on the reefcast map that would highlight an inlet, or have a separate map with similar style and just inlets (at least the main ones - I don't expect to be able to find out how a 4' deep passable only at high tide inlet in the middle of Core Banks is going to behave.

Dave, as a kayak fisherman that goes in the ocean periodically I would like to make a suggestion that you give that information out for free...maybe have it in the SEECast area but during an alert have it on the top banner with the ReefCast and SEECast link with big yellow triangles with exclamation points...this isn't the typical thing we see on here where people ask about weather windows, this is a safety issue...people will always take a chance depending on boat size and comfort level with rough seas but being able to get in and out safely when they have exceeded their comfort level is probably even more important...it also might help those with a hard time deciding on a "GO" or "NO GO" decision...

So my thoughts so far.....
In ReefCast or SEECast.....
If the inlet is displayed and Hazard conditions are expected in the next 5 days then we will display a yellow triangle with an H on it that you will NOT be able to turn off
If you click on you will get a list of days and times to be aware of
Here on the website.....it will be free
I will have a widget like we use for the buoys at the top of the site
It will be free but you will have to select an inlet for it to display it

Hi Dave, Excellent idea and addition to the already great tools you provide. I like the idea of keeping it simple with the hazard icon over the inlet and then clicking the icon to get the info. This would be a lot more user friendly versus having a separate area for inlet info. Thanks for doing this!

I'd want to know what the hazard conditions are (why it's unsafe). Unsafe in a 21' CC and unsafe in a 48' Sportfisher are two completely different things, but then are you starting to take on liability? If somebody's hubby goes out on a safe day and eats it in the inlet, is she going to say "we'll he checked reefcast and it said it'd be safe today!"

I think the triangle icon is a great idea and it won't get in the way of what we need to do on SEEcast. As for liability, it would seem "extra hazard present" would cover it...not saying it's safe on non hazard days but extra hazardous on these days/times. The first thing I thought when this accident happened was what were these guys thinking? It may not save people who don't pay attention but if it helps one person from a tragic accident it's worth it.

Nice feature for sure.
I like the idea of having some type of initial notification when visiting a page or forecast, so that is very helpful.
If it were me personally providing the info, I would definitely have a disclaimer regarding no liability on the part of whomever is providing the info, and all responsibility being on that of the user or consumer of the info.

I also like the hazard icon over the inlet, whether you include a reason or not, it let's you know that conditions are going to be sporty if you go. IF there is a way to indicate what kind of conditions, that would be great because as someone noted, it may not be good for a kayak, but it could be OK for a larger vessel. Maybe you indicate on the hazard icon a number that represents boat length and anything under that should take warning/avoid, anything above that number would be warned but maybe do-able? Just throwing out ideas to keep it simple and get the message to the right people, not even sure that any of these ideas are possible but there you go.

How about a "proactive" banner that flashes if any inlet warnings exist. You click on the banner to see which inlets are under "warning", then click on the inlet of choice for specifics.
This would make it a little more visible and prevent someone from having to "remember" to look at their particular inlet.

I appreciate all that you do on your website Capt Dave. As always you are looking for that next move to help us. Just a thought and I have no idea how much of a pain it would be but you could let it have its own page instead of putting it on ReefCast or SEECast. Then before going to the page you could have a warning before we can go to the next step to see the inlets. I know you said you weren't worried about liability but just a thought. I am sure however you decide to do it you will provide the best infor out there. Thanks again for all you do on here.

The biggest issue I see is what inlet or inlets to display to an individual user. I guess I could do it by “State” but I don’t know.
We have a working example. Now I just have to complete with a dataset to it country wide. It is easy to do for this inlet or that inlet. The hard part is doing it for all inlets and keeping them up to date.

Could the user not set a default one? I have a default buoy set up on my profile. Wouldn't hurt to have a default inlet.
I'd guess that over 90% of the people that use this site go out of one inlet 90% of the time. It might switch up every now and then (for about 3 years it was MHC for me, then for the next 10 it was Hatteras, and now it's Bardens). That doesn't mean I don't go out of other inlets periodically (NRI once a year for bonito, or random.other.inlet with somebody else) but for me, 90% of the time it's gonna be Barden's going forward. So having a default inlet is probably gonna make 90% of the people happy, then if they need to switch it later, that's on them.
