American shad. (Alosa sapidissima) They are excellent table fare but are full of bones

Looks like a hickory shad to me. Not as round as an American.

The lower jaw on a hickory shad extends prominently outward from the upper jaw. Thats the giveaway on the hickory and ameeican. Both are almost identical except for the very different jaw makup

Hard to tell from pics on American or Hickory. My bet is American in Cape Fear Basin. Heard reports of them catching them at lock #1 already. Seems early but weather been pretty for most part
