Folks,
I’m an Arborist with Carolina Tree Care in Raleigh. In addition to the water, batteries, and fuel, please add insurance info to your preparation list. Contact your agents and confirm coverages and deductible amounts. Most deductible payments go toward repairs but many times are applied to the tree removal. In this case you will need to be prepared to pay the deductible to your tree service before work can begin.
Being prepared can reduce response times and delays in repairs.
Good luck everyone. I hope it is not as bad as forecast.

A few more thoughts on this subject. First, realize that during an emergency most reputable companies prioritize their efforts by level of need. They will remove trees that have fallen on homes first, trees that threaten to fail and strike homes second, safety and further damage to structures is the priority. The next step is to clear vehicles and access to properties. If you have a tree down in the yard it may be a while before they can get to it.

During any of these events there will be a flood of companies from out of the area and state come to help. Most of them are here to do just that. Be nice to them. They have left their families to come in and assist any way they can. Most of the larger companies crews sign on for a month or more.

Please beware, however. Do not be in such a rush to get things cleaned up that one of the shady companies takes you for much more than the job is worth. Prices go up during and after a storm for many perfectly good reasons but watch out for price gouging. Check the Certificate of Insurance and get references or referral from your insurance company before accepting a bid or letting them start work. Competing bids for jobs especially when insurance is not involved with is always a good idea.

Be prepared and help others as you can.

Good advice, same goes in the fence industry. If you need help with your fence problems after storm give me a buzz. Hope like heck you don't and nothing else gets messed up.

Here we go again. Stay safe everyone. One other safety item since the topic of fences was brought up...

If you have a tree down on a chain link or other fence please be aware of possible electrical hazards. If an energized line is down on the fence it can energize the fence itself. If the fence is connected to others in the neighborhood the electricity can travel from several homes away.

Hoping things will not be too bad in the Carolinas. Praying for folks in Florida and Georgia.
