If you see a charter boat offshore bottom fishing please don't run over to them and circle them to get the coordinates. Call me on 18 and ask I will help you out
Had a white 23 contender yesterday with a single engine and a red bottom run over to me within 25 yards and mark my bottom numbers
I work hard to get those numbers and have found all of them on my own.
I don't mind helping someone out but this is getting ridiculous call me and ask I will be glad to help out.
Oh yeh fishing was great big bass and beeliners and plenty of gaffers

Well put ! Everybody asks me why I never lettered any of my boats, there is one of the reasons. You are one of the few charter Captains that I am sure would help out with leading a weekend warrior to some good fishing, it is a shame that somebody would selfishly act in such a way to make you less likely to want to help somebody else in the future. There is plenty of good bottom out there, no need to encroach on somebody trying to make a living.

Just common courtesy seems in short supply sometimes. Half the fun is finding your own spots anyway.

The ones that ride in and steal probably don't know what to do with it after they get it.Then there are the ones with radar/plotter you don,t even know about. You can single one out but it will someone else next time

I agree with BigJohnCC. That it is fun finding your own spots.

That wouldn't happen but once in the Bahamas. It would then be a red Contender white a white bottom.

I agree thats uncalled for too, but there is another scenario to consider.
I never bottom fish and only slow troll for Kings, dolphin, etc with live and dead bait. I have run to a favorite spot before 25-30 miles offshore and find a boat anchored up bottom fishing on the exact ledge i just spent an hour running too. I'm not going to bother him but if I don't have another spot close by I am going to put out the baits and troll the area.
He probably thinks I am trying to get the numbers for his spot but I'm not. If he's an observant captain he will notice I only have light king tackle and hopefully understand I have no interest in bottom fishing that spot. But more than likely he's thinking I want the numbers. Since I know I'm not stealing his numbers I don't feel I've done anything wrong.

It is easy to tell the difference between someone trolling and someone marking numbers

Doesn't just happen to charters... I have a video I'll try to dig up of a Sea Fox circling me 20 miles off on a sea bass lump.

Not another boat in sight, acres upon acres of live bottom all around but he corn holed me anyway.

Not saying it wasn't a recreational boat, but there is a Charter Captain out of the Topsail area that runs a boat like you described. Doesn't make it right, but don't assume it was a weekend warrior.

These days you don't even have to come close to the boat you are spotting just put the cursor of the radar on it and mark the lat./lon.

Yep! Gotta love technology! Not very polite to circle someone that close but as far as numbers - One person doesn't own the ocean. Upsetting as it is, its a part of it.
