All just wanted to share the good news... we are working on a new Military Appreciation Day event for June 4 and 5 in Morehead City after a two year absence!

We are planning for a much smaller event than we have had in the past. This one will be basically a scaled down fishing and food event only, no family activities. We have chartered the Carolina Princess and will seek a maximum of 50 Volunteer provided boats. Jaycee Park will once again be the hub of water based operations and meals will be at City Park/MLK Park.

More details to follow soon!

Any reason on limiting the number of volunteer boats? I’m guessing it has to do with post fishing chow vice the fishing evolution. Maybe a staggered return to dock times to keep crowd numbers down? I think there is a lot of pent up fishing waiting to bust loose!

Hi everyone. There are a few factors that have led to the decision to focus on a smaller event this year.
As you know, MHC had to be cancelled the last 2 years. So this will be a bit of a rebuilding year. So the focus will be on a smaller event and doing it well.
Another factor is lack of volunteers, especially in the MHC area. Most all of the folks that have signed up for this event, so far at least, are from out of town.
So please, if you want to get more involved with MAD, go to the website and sign up as a volunteer - Militaryappreciationday.net. This has changed from .org. We are not signing up volunteer boats just yet, I believe that our target for starting to sign up skippers/boats is mid March, so please watch for that.
The third factor is our unwelcome friend COVID. We will have to wait and see how many troops can/will sign up and are allowed to attend.
I personally think that making this event much larger may attract unwelcome scrutiny and attention from folks.
I am hopeful that by June 5, that it will be a bit less of an issue as vaccinations increase.
I like the suggestion of staggering boat launches and arrivals. That may be something we need to discuss,
Please feel free to message me if you want to discuss getting involved.

Not sure but you might want to look into the dates of the Kelly Wagner Ladies tournament and the Big Rock. The KWLA might be that weekend also and may limit some from signing up.

We still host an event in Southport each year in September and one in Charleston usually in October

One of the reasons that the MHC event failed in 2019 was that we could not gather enough volunteers to do the work of preparing the event.
Last year it was a COVID casualty

In order to restore the MHC event we need to start small and get good at it again before we expand. With the crew of experience MAD volunteers coming back, we have the experience to pull it off but we still struggle with the workload so we are going to do it small and do it right before we start to expand again.
