On Target With White Marlin, King Mackerel and Fluke

August 1, 2013 - August is tournament month for many East Coast and Gulf of Mexico anglers, and whether you're a Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) member who likes to fish close to the beach or out past the horizon, there's a chance for you to hit it big at weigh-in this month while also supporting your right to fish!

First up is the world's largest billfish tournament, the 40th Annual White Marlin Open, which kicks off with final registrations this Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4 from noon to 5 p.m. at Harbour Island Marina in Ocean City, MD. Following Sunday's captain's meeting at 7 p.m., fishing will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 5th as tournament participants can fish any three days, from August 5-9, with weigh-ins back at Harbour Island Marina each afternoon.

The 2012 White Marlin Open featured huge tuna, a Maryland State record shark, and a white marlin that earned top honors and $1.4 million in prize money. A total of 253 boats entered last year, with competitors from Florida to New England competing for more than $2.3 million in prize money for catches of white and blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin and shark.

Ocean City lived up to its title of "The White Marlin Capital of the World" in 2012 with 960 whites caught during the 39th annual event, with all but 8 released back into the ocean. This year's 40th annual White Marlin Open is sure to be another big event, with a portion of annual tournament proceeds going to the RFA to support our ongoing efforts to protect the rights of coastal anglers and businesses.
