Looking to buy a trolling motor for my son’s 13 foot Boston Whaler for Christmas. I don’t need anything really fancy. Any advice would be appreciated. I haven’t ever bought a saltwater trolling motor before and don’t really know what to be looking for.

Minn Kota or motor guide salt water motors. I have run different motors for almost 40 years and to me the ones today are all junk. I use the minn Kota rip tide myself but I honestly can't say it's better than any of the other big name motors. I do know some guys that like the motor guides. If you get a rip tide and the internal pin that locks the prop to the shaft breaks simply remove the prop and cut the head off a 8d nail and you are fixed. The others are prob the same for this repair. If he fishes shallow he will break it bc the factory pins are crap. The repair using the nail is much better.

My pin broke and I put a screw into the face near the middle and it has worked fine. Beware the remote control, mine goes left fine but going right is hit and miss. Does anyone know if a foot pedal will work better or is it a motor issue?

I have the xi5 motorguide & have been VERY happy with it. Lot of features I don't use though. Anchor button is worth the cost alone!

If you don't want a fancy remote control one look for the hand steer Minn kotas - you can find a good used one fairly cheap. Easy install, easy to maintain. I bought one for $200 in great shape for my last boat - compare that to $1600!

Take measurements for length you need & for a 13' whaler I'd say a 50-55# thrust is what you're looking at.

Whatever you buy, get a Ram mount for it to keep it from bouncing in rough water too. They need support!

A boat that small, space is at a premium. I have an engine mounted Minn Kota Riptide EM55. Works perfectly and I got it brand new for $700.
