Just read this morning in the Island Gazette. What a shame. Hopefully they will work something out. I say build a Jetty and be done with it. What are y'all thoughts?

Here's the story: https://mailchi.mp/1e12ecee33a9/inlet-closing?fbclid=IwAR26bHrvGMQIxjUEr3WhQQROJosJ_Vp5HqlEef7XIQAYFIiDUi3WLjbo-3o

"Today, we were informed of the scheduled closure of Carolina Beach Inlet, during a conversation between CBIA President Mike Britt and US Coast Guard Commander Heather Stratton, they – the USCG, are pulling the navigational buoys – The inlet is simply no longer safe for navigation."

The link has a lot of additional stuff from CB Inlet Assoc, mostly opinion stuff on how NHC didn't do enough to help keep it open.

Similar problems have been occurring at Lockwood Folly Inlet. Brunswick County has finally gotten onboard with the local beach towns and has been doing a great job as of lately. LWF is in great shape currently. As far as I know, New Hanover Co was doing the same thing with Carolina Beach Inlet, but it seems someone dropped the ball. Wonder if funds that were supposed to go to the inlet got diverted elsewhere?

This will effect business's (recreational fisherman, commercial fisherman, marinas, gas stations, etc) dramatically in this area. I would want answers from the county to what happened to the funds for the dredging.

I've used CBI for the last 37 years. I say, let them close it. Once they start feeling the economic impact from lost revenue they will get their heads out of their asses and build the damn jetty they have talked about for the last four decade's.

What I find totally disgusting is the millions of dollars that have been thrown away over the years for dredging. That money should have been spent years ago on putting in jetties. The inlet would have been stabilized. Beach erosion would be a lot less. Who is being paid off to prevent common sense from being applied? mad

I don't believe cbi will be reliably navigable for very long if they don't dredge it. Going to be a very dangerous place for the occasional boater who has used it a couple of times here and there for decades. The economic impact will be big enough that something will be done before too long.

I've heard both sides of the jetty argument (I use Rich Inlet a lot). I don't think it always solves beach erosion, just relocates it. Guessing where the erosion picks up is about as reliable as the weather forecast.

They pulled the markers at the S turn from Harkers Island to Bardens too. But the locals drove in some pvc conduits with painted cones on the top. Actually a lot easier
to navigate it now.

The only thing that I can base it on is years of running Jines Inley, Fire Island Inlet and Montauk Point inlet. All had jetties, maybe every 10 years a dredge would come in and freshen them up. Both fire Island and Jones were south facing inlets as were Shinnecock and Moriches inlet. Montauk point was a NE facing inlet. CBI is an easterly facing inlet. But for that matter so is Masonboro. How often is Masonboro dredged?

The current thinking is literally shoveling sand against the tide. Just one giant waste of money.

South Carolina doesn't have many problems with their inlets with jetties. Jetties work.

The inlet itself is fine, it's guessing where the erosion will go, how the inshore shallows will get screwed up, etc that's tricky. The Army Corp of Engineers has had to re-nourish sand on Fire Island multiple times over the years. They even looked into relocating it a few years back.

Masonboro Inlet hasn't really been a huge problem because the extra erosion moved over to the North end of Masonboro where there are no houses, so they can just dredge it every year or two to put sand back. Carolina Beach does have Freeman Park on the North end, but isn't completely uninhabited.

Not trying to be a hippie or anything. Just want to fish and oysters to still be there to grab up.

I agree about the erosion. Why do they not do one of their famous studies? This way there would be some sort of a plan in place. But it would need to be done from an engineering standpoint no politics should enter into it. Then we would all know what can/can't be done and the environmental consequences. If it is deemed that jetties will not work I will shut up. But it seems like the only reason jetties are not even spoken about is that certain groups do not want it. I understand the desire to keep it open for the charter boats and private boats (including myself) that use it. But to keep throwing money at something without a clear plan to fix it is just wasteful. Just my .02.
Thanks for the discussion. We need to keep it going. wtg

Yessir. Glad they are at least planning on getting the inlet straightened out so it's useable this summer.

There's already federal politics in it. The channel was mandated where it is by congress and it is federally maintained.

Additionally I believe it was actually scheduled to be dredged again in April. Part of the story that wasn't put out by the media is that the ATON vessel wasn't able to get in there to move the buoys due to the shallow depth. I find it hard to believe in that I went through there yesterday and saw 5 feet at the shallowest.

Also, I wonder what affect the weeks dredge had digging a deep hole on the inside.

Ryan, I was referencing local political groups that are afraid of the possible damage to the environment. From what I have heard they are all funded by groups to the north and west which has no idea what goes on down here. They just send money to the environmental groups. Look at the commercial guys. They can't pot sea bass because a whale could possibly get caught in a trap line. Look at the fishing regs we all have to contend with. You almost have to hold a law degree to fish. Permits and fees are going up the wazoo. I just renewed my HMS permit. In the past, it's been $20.00 this year it went up 30%. It's only $6.00 but for what? The whole thing stinks. Anything special interests or the government gets involved in goes to crap. A few weeks ago I saw something saying that the Black Sea Bass were destroying other fish species because there were so many. The plan that was being thrown about was to limit the harvest of other bottom species. How smart is that? Wouldn't it make more sense to lower the size limit to 12 1/2 inches and increase the bag limit to 10? This way it would take the natural pressure off the other species caused by the overabundance of Black Sea Bass. But then again what do I know? I'm just an old man with common sense, and I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn last night roll
