Im not starting this post to cause any issues with anyone lol I just recently got my cape horn and it was in beautiful shape and I want to keep it that way. The the gel coat is in great condition with awesome reflection and no oxidation that I can see. My question is should I just put a polish and wax on it or a polish and wax. I have also heard of a cleaner wax......? I just detailed my other boat back here in a ohio before winterized. I did the whole process because it had some oxidation on it. I did put some Woodys wax on the non skid and almost all of the inside a couple weeks ago. I would like to do this at least twice a year to prevent having to do any oxidation removing. It may not be a brand new boat to me but it is new to me and I baby my toys lol I have used and familiar with a rotary buffer/polisher. Just want to know if there is anything special you guys do down there with the salt water! Thanks Guys!

JJ’s boat service out of Southport. Been using them for the past two years. They do all my detail work on the lift and do a damn good job! They are getting read to put ceramic coating on my Grady. Can’t wait to see how it turns out

I am going to do it myself. I just wanna know what you guys recommended for using on the boats down there. Just a polish and wax? or a cleaner wax?

I think if you talk to 10 detailers, all 10 will tell you cleaner / wax is not the way to go. There is no shortcuts that work. A good quality wax is the way to go if your gelcoat is in good shape. I have been using Rejex, which I personally like, but there lots of good wax out there. Rejex is not a traditional wax but its works great for me.

Woody wax on the non-skid works great but doesn’t last very long. I re-apply about after every 2nd or 3rd third offshore trip. I use a good detailer for the hull. Collinite usually but last time he used a different polymer that has held up well.

If I dont have any oxidation on the boat do I need the Heavy Compound???

If you don't have oxidation on the gelcoat you don't need to compound at all.

Don't use compound unless needed and even then use with caution and care. I used many different waxes and all of them seemed to work great. Main thing is keeping it clean after the use. I had my boat for 6 years and waxed it 3 times total. Everything looked great the day I sold it with the exception of a few "my fault" things.

Short answer, Probably. Your gelcoat is oxidised (probably very minor though)
Most compounds you will see are meant for auto or paint detailing so even a "heavy" compound isnt all that abrasive on gelcoat. I will always suggest getting a nice shine on your gelcoat before waxing it helps the wax last longer before you need to buff again. Just my $.02 it's worth hiring someone, they have the tools, experience, and back to get a buffer into everywhere.

I your gel coat is good, don't use a compound
Clean it and follow up with a good wax

I have been using collinite on the hull of my boat twice a year. Keeps it shiny and easy to clean with a wash mitt. I also found starbrite deck cleaner, used it this past weekend and wow what a difference! My wife even commented on how bright it was compared to the regular boat soap we were using
Like you it is my baby and a big investment so I am going to take care of it.

I have heard good things on Rejex as well as collinite. Collinite is sold at the marina where my boat is.

My boat needed compounded and waxed bad. A couple years ago I gave it a try and completely sucked at it. I pretty much just ignored it and fished. Fast forward to a month ago. I hired Brian, aka Cheeks, to do a complete inside and out on my offshore boat and just the outside of my inshore boat. He did an awesome job! Both boats shine like new now. Since I have a good baseline I’m sure I can maintain it now. I highly recommend Brian if you need help.

I did my buddies boat back here in Ohio that was a 2006 and he had never detailed it. It took me a while but when I was done it looked like a completely different boat. I got the the original color back that he hasn't seen shine in years. I actually enjoyed doing it. He said there was no way I could get it to look like it use to. I did a couple passes of just some serious compounding but once I got through the 11 years of oxidation it was starting to be a good sign.
