Call up world wide marine training and take the class. There are others but that's who I got mine though.

I honestly wouldn't bother with it until you want to use it. Its a lot of trouble and adds liability to yourself.

I went through the mariners learning system. Was nice because I could take the quizzes and online classes when I could work it into my crazy schedule. Final test is done in a classroom though.

Sea School. Nice to have and not that much trouble to keep up. Renew every 5 years with Coast Guard. Had mine since '99.

I went to the local community college (Cape Fear). I liked having other students around and picking the brains of the 40-year master mariner that taught the course. I've never used mine but I'm glad I got it.

I've been a master captain for 10 years, took the class to be a better boater and in hopes of some day making a living on the sea. The liability comment is real so pay attention but do not let it stop you from proceeding. We need more educated and respectful boaters and less carelessness that we see from so called weekend warriors. you will need to log a lot of hours so be prepared.

I also did World Wide Marine for my license, but as a few have said it will increase your liability on the water. Just spoke to a charter capt that just let his go because he fish's but not chartering anymore and doesn't want the liability. He is one of many I know that have let theirs go. Good luck if you go for it.

Can anyone point out where this 'increased liability' is spelled out in any official document?

I can't find anything official. Seems like there is a lot of conflicting stories and info about it.

That said, if you aren't going to use it, there's not much benefit to sitting for the test and going through TWIC card, and drug testing and all that. If you want to increase your knowledge you can still take the class.

Not spelled out, but if you get in an accident they are looking t you first regardless of who was at fault because you should know, your a CAPT. If you are on your buddies boat and he gets pulled for BUI and you are onboard you can get in trouble for allowing him to drive, because you are a CAPT, etc, etc, etc.

Pin, I have heard that, but have you ever seen this personally? I have been on a boat where the operator got a ticket, and they didn't even ask the rest of us for fishing licenses, much less id's.

Not personally, but have been told to keep your mouth shut just in case and not to offer up your credentials unless you are in command of the vessel. Same thing goes in an accident, the licensed capt is held to a higher standard because the capt should know what to do in different situations. The weekend warrior can play"stupid" to the situation. Having it is not worth it unless you are using it.

I told my insurance company I had my license, figured I may get a discount...
They wanted to raise my premium just knowing the additional liability and standards the licensee is held by.

Seems like there are a lot of if this, if that. The man was only asking for information on how to obtain his License. Does not matter why he wants it. I am in the process of getting mine as well. Why? Because I feel like it.

I quit running charters about 8 years ago.

And even though I doubt I will ever use my license again I didn't want to just give it up either. It was too much work to get in the first place.

So I had the Coast Guard make it "inactive".

All I have to do if I do if I ever want to re-activate it is fill out a time log and enter the dug testing program again.

Coast Guard in Charleston walked me right through it and it was very simple.

This would be a funny story is it wasn't so pitiful.

I once lost my drivers license.

Ok, I had an expired license and a TWIC card.

Took that to the DMV to get a replacement license.

They wouldn't accept my expired license OR my TWIC card as an acceptable form of ID.

Now anyone that has been through the hassle of federal background checks and getting a TWIC card would find this nuts.

After an all day affair, they finally accepted a copy of my home power bill.

Which of course, I could have gotten out of anyone's mailbox.
huh

Tried to use my Coast Guard credentials (which you get with your license) to board a plane. they did not know what to do with it as they have never seen one. I finally got on the plane but not without a bit of scrutiny. The deal with the liability, I was made aware of this as I took my onsite classes sitting next to a CG service member. I did not see anything in writing but was informed that anytime a boating incident involves the Coast Guard they do an investigation. If you are a captain your actions are reviewed by a Coast Guard Board and if found to be negligent the fines are tough, My understanding is they can be $5,000 - $10,000 per violation. Sounds crazy, I agree, Not sure they would go this hard non serious incidents but its their option.

If you have no contract then you limit your liabilities is what I understand. a contract can be a verbal agreement made on the docs such as taking money for fuel etc. You've agreed to take someone fishing in exchange for something of monetary value. Tha'ts a contract the same as a charter. as a recreational fisherman its not a big deal, as a licensed captain it is. Good luck.

CFCC prepared me well for the exam and they helped when it came time for the application process. Plus it's less expensive than the other programs.

I was going to get my license and asked my insurance provider the same thing and they told my that my premiums would go up significantly for these exact same reasons even if I did not plan to use the license.

Seems this would be a good question for Adam and Liz on the Marine Insurance Forum.

I don't recall paying more for my boat insurance when I got it. Might have paid extra for the business side when I was actually running charters.

I'll post a link to this conversation and see if we can get their feedback.

You insurance doesn't go up just because you get the license. Heck your insurance company wouldn't know you have it if you don't tell them. The only reason to let them know is if you plan to use the license to actually charter and have people pay you to fish. If you aren't going to do that no need to say anything to them. If you do plan to use it to charter and have people pay you DO have to let them know as you will have to increase and change your policy to reflect that which will cause it to go up. Some folks make this much harder than it actually is.

Lots of conflicting information here, guys. From an insurance carrier's point of view (be it small boat or large boat), you don't get a higher rate just because you have more training and successfully gained your USCG captains license. In fact the reverse is true - if you have a captains license, you should actually get credit for it with your carrier. Same is true about having USPS or USCG safety coursework. Some carriers give the same amount of credit, some give marginally more for having an active captains license (for example, you might see 5% credit for safety course, but 10% credit for captains license). I have never, in all years working with every domestic carrier out there (other than the captives like State Farm, Farm Bureau, Nationwide) seen an underwriter ding a guy for having a captains license. Why in the world would they? They would, rather, encourage you to get more and more training, resulting in (theoretically) a safer boater/insured. Note, however, that the actual dollars you save with the crediting will never equal the cost you paid for captains school and the test and government fees. That said, I'll take every credit I can get!

Now, as one forumite noted above, if you were to use that captains license, and your boat, "commercially" (includes charter/guide/inspected and other commercial risks like diving/bottom cleaning and the like), of course you'd expect to pay a higher rate. Simply due to the commercial nature of your risk. Here, you don't see any credit or surcharge for having a captains license - it's simply "required" of you in order to even get this commercial coverage.

Hope that helps clear things up a bit! If you're on the fence on whether to get your ticket or not, I say go on and get it. Then let your agent know when you have a copy of your new license in your hand (so you can send them pic of it), and ask for the discount. If you find your agent start talking about a surcharge, then it's time to call me and Liz!

Catch 'em up,

Adam

I too am interested in talking the class. Not for commercial fishing, but to simply have it. Looking for something to pass the time.
