I use a Clorox jug with thin dacron line and a 2 lb dive weight to mark a spot. The trouble is that when the line dries - it shrinks a bit and squeezes the jug and soon cracks it.
The solution is to use some "expanding foam" you can buy in any hardware store. Spray some in the jug (not too much) and let it expand and come out the top. Once cured, cut the excess foam and put the cap back on. The jug is now very firm and non-sinkable!

I like to use an old crab pot buoy. Nice and bright so if you're drifting you'll be able to see it.

You need to submit that one to Salt Water Sportsman or Sport Fishing Mags. Might get you a free reel.

Gatoraie bottle works reel good too, because of the ridges sticking up it will hold line, use old window weight to get it set quicker.

For those of us with 2 Stroke motors I use the oil jugs. Pennzoil, they are bright yellow tie mason cord to the handle. I have a entire set marked with different line lengths marked on each one 75' 100' 125' and 150' in a milk crate. I have a snap swivel tied to each one, Took 3 16 ounce sinkers taped them together with electrical tape and ran a wire through the top. hook the snap on to the wire for the correct depth. Also keep (3) 10 foot lengths of mason cord with a loop on one end and snap on the other. This way if you get into 160' or 85' you add the extension to the end of the buoy line add your weight and let her go.

Pour small amount of bright paint on INSIDE of bottle, swirl around until paint evenly distributed, and replace cap. Makes jug easy to see and paint won't wash or wear off.
