Do you plan on fishing with a friend on his boat this year? Maybe you're plan on splitting fuel costs....okay that's cool. What about crimps? Do you expect the boat owner to buy them? What about lure losses? I bet I've lost $25K worth of gear to the deep in my time. Ever show up and hand your fishing buddy, the boat owner, a couple Ilander Jr's? What about planers? God how I hate buying planers at 28 bucks a pop!!! Oh that's not your problem you say....
If you want to get invited back to "share fuel costs" with a fishing buddy, then I suggest a hundred count pack of crimps in a goody bag of of other terminals. Fuel costs don't even come close to what a boat owner spends! A couple coils of leader would be nice. Uhhh What's That? 20 new still indabox 7731 Mustads? Aw thanks bro! You shoudn't have but thank you!!!!!
What about a stringer of fresh sea witches by B. Hunt himself? Do you think they grow roadside and the boat owner stops and picks them like wild flowers enroute to the boat ramp? I think knot!
Let's say 3 maybe 4 guys team up to go offshore on a friends boat. Do you expect the boat owner to maintain a proper life jacket for you? Do you expect the boat owner to maintain all electronics? Do you expect the boat owner to pay for Seaview services? Do you expect the boat owner to service his rods/reels each year and re-spool reels and pay for it out of his pocket? Do you expect a boat owner to pay for all terminal gear, custom rods, buy the best reels, and have the finest kind of anything and everything? YOU DO? .....I'm certified bonafide mortified speechless here.
I bet you also think it's fair then for the boat owner to also antee up and pay an equal share of fuel costs? You do? WOW.
Come to think of it, a hundred count of 1.3 crimps or a bag of 1/4 oz eggs doesn't sound like such a bad idea now does it......

You forgot Sea Tow memebership, Boat Insurance(Ouch), taxes, maintenance(mine was about $8000) last year). Oh yeah, and can you come back in October/Novmenber right in the middle of prime Deer Hunting and help me get her winterized. Then back in January just to make sure she didn't sink, and then back again early spring just to redo outriggers and spruce her up. I'm probably going to need your help one more time before we even think about going fishing.

Oh just bring your good looking girlfriend in a bikini. You'll still have to pitch in for fuel, but I'll cover the fishing tackle this trip.

Those are words so true. I think some, if not most of us has been left holding the bag several times. Fishing/boating is not cheap. Charlie

Amen brother, but I'm that other guy. My friend and his two brother's-in-law bought the boat. They're strapped with payments and insurance. The two BIL's only get on the boat if going trolling for Spanish or pulling a tube down the ICW. My friend pays for Sea Tow and has a few combos and has bought some rigs. Three of us fish together normally, it's understood that we (the non-boat owners) buy the gear. I know it's a drop in the bucket compared to most of you guys (we're lucky if we get to fish six times a year due to work and weather; the other two are successful HS football coaches and go DEEP in the playoffs every year so the boat stays parked from AUG-DEC) but I spent around $3000 this winter on 2 new Avet EXW 50's and LX6.1's (I built the rods and a gaff), had reels serviced, built a dredge, and misc gear; over $300 at Tex's last weekend getting reels spooled and Islanders, crimps, hooks flouro, wire. $200+ today on jigs and assist hooks.
I love fishing and being on the water with good friends so I like to try and earn my keep.

Well said. I'm gonna print this off and show it to my fishing "buddies"! You didn't even mention trailer expenses. I feel like a charter captain that's not getting paid!

Right on the money. I am lucky I have a good group of guys that fish with me.
On thing to add to your list if you are trolling during the Mahi madness 5-8 packs of ballyhoo sure isn't cheap.

Well said and THANK YOU! So true. It certainly can get frustrating. Like you said.... A little goes a long way with me just to recognize the expenses.

Nice post Box! Hope this opens some eyes.
Tat2,
If your buddies ever sell the boat, you are more than welcome to go fishing with me. You are one of the few who understand and step up to the plate. Good going man!

Here here!! And don't think family is excused from this as much as I love them my brother and dad KILL ME!!!! They'll suprise me with bringing a "guest" at the last minute then proceed to loose every rig, jig, or mirro lure "I" tie on while they use my gear. Then kick me $10 a piece for gas and expect to take home most of the fish we catch and that "I" clean. My fishing partner buys leader, sinkers, lures, etc as well as brings lunch and helps clean the boat and fish. Guess who gets to go the most. While blood may be thicker than water, it's not thicker than fish slime.

Jump on. But start praying to the wind gods now and offering small animals as sacrifices. That way, we might get offshore one time this fall if its like last year.

I HAD 3 regulars and down to 1 this year. The one pays what he can afford and is always there to help with the work. He volunteered to compound and wax this spring. The other 2 ~ no equipment, no bait, no gas money........ One called last week and asked when WE were going. Told him I was going as it costs me less going alone. Funny they have money for golf and beer but ~~~ done with them both this year even though my wife does not like me going alone.

My situation is different than most of you being that I dont go offshore, and my boat isnt nearly as nice or expensive to maintain and run compared to other boats. But I honestly find enjoyment of taking people fishing. My trips normally cost me $20-$40 in fuel, and maybe some tackle loss and such per trip.
A couple of the guys I fish with are regulars, I can call anytime and they are usually willing to go, and help out with launching and recovering the boat. They bring their own rods and some of their own tackle, though its a mutual understanding that what I have in my tackle bag is free game to try, same with any tackle they may bring. They both are good fishermen and can operate the boat and trolling motor without issue. Not often do they throw in money for gas, but to me its ok. One of the guys has a boat similar to mine that we use if we fish closer to his house than mine, and doesnt expect money or any sort of payment from me.
Some of the other people I take from work very rarely fish, and have little to none of thier own gear. I have to watch them more while on the water, and launch and recover the boat myself usually. To me though, this is all part of the game. I enjoy taking these people because its something they
rarely get to do and everyone usually has a good time.
Regardless if anyone goes with me or not, I was going to fish that day, so to me, for them to throw gas money in seems rediculous. If anyone ever does, I usually just take that money and put it into tackle. Like I said, my situation is different, but I expect zero money to come from guests. I just enjoy being on the water, and if its with other people that enjoy themselves, even better.
For those that have regulars that fish with them, do you expect those people to help with boat maintence or repair costs? Just curious.

Great thread. We gotta split the towing cost to get to the coast as well. I am lucky to have a friend who is as stoked as I am about fishing. He washes the boat, I clean the fish.

Box, you only scratched the surface of boat ownership and operation as you well know. I am lucky, some offer to pitch in for fuel. Have had some walk away at the end of the day no money, and no help with the clean up. I try to let my regulars know what the cost of running out to the stream costs but only expect them to kick in "x" dollars.. I am fortunate to fish with some good guys and since I know they are on a more limited budget than I, I don't get down to splitting hairs on the cost, but it sure is nice when they pitch in on the clean up and prep.

I'll agree with Box for the most part. I don't have a big boat but I love to fish outside. I fish with a friend in S. Port from time to time. I always pay for fuel, oil, & bait. I generally bring the ice because I have access to a machine. I make my own bottom rigs and use my own rods when we jig. I have a few trolling rods, but he always says" We'll just use mine" I always bring extra snacks, drinks, etc. We also have a policy of "you're welcome to use it". We all bring our own tackle bags with trolling and bottom stuff. I always give him more $ than the fuel/bait is estimated to be, we all take turns running the boat when going back to the numbers. I generally bring my share of fish with me because it's an hour drive one way, if I lived closer we would team clean. It would very hard for me to fish with a person who is eyeing every dollar that they think I should be responsible for. I certainly don't keep a tally of whose using or lost some of my tackle. If you call me and ask if I want to fish and split the fuel, bait, etc--I know it's your boat and you have more expenses- but I'm assuming you are talking about splitting with you. I appreciate the fact that he calls me and asks me to go. I always help clean the boat and rods. Bottom line is if you expect something from a fellow fisherman--let him/her know up front. That way you can agree on the end result. I do like the idea of bring a bag of leader/crimps and saying--here ya go.
I do think it's a crapping thing to:
1. Do not offer to pay for fuel/bait/etc
2. Do not offer to clean boat/rods
3. Keep on fishing an not help wash down the deck on occasion
4. Use all the bait and not cut more.
5. Let the other guys pull in the anchor line every time.
I could go on but I'd miss a lot. A non-owner should make every effort to be helpful with all tasks to show their appreciation.

Noodle,
I hear you except I do (now did as I will not do it again) ) not get the offer of a 10 lousy bucks...these are inlaws.
I have even offered to give them the uncleaned fish and been asked if I can clean them because they do not know how.....when I offer to show them....well they just ignore the effort....aaarrrrgggghhh.
