What reels do you guys like to use for offshore bottom fishing. We have figured out how to catch nice triggers, vermillions, american reds and such, but can't get any life out of spinning reels. Is it the quality of the reel?? We've had mainly gears that break. 4 out of 6 spinning reels have bit the dust in less than a year. Not trying to trash a manufacturer, but the are Penn Battle II's. Does Penn or whomever offer a spinner that will last?? We clean with fresh water upon return so that has been consistent and not the problem. I don't know what those reels need for maintenance, but would think they would not need attention for less than 10 trips in a year. Currently using some old Penn open face squidder & jigmaster reels. Only downside the these are the reel stability with the kids. Get some rocking side to side at times. Not looking to go electric, like to see my boys grunt & groan on a big fish. Thanks for any feedback!

Old School Penn 113H and Penn 114H
Get the OLD ones with metal spools and frames. They will be used and abused for years to come.

The "Penn US Senator 113HN" is the new model number for the old Baja special and aside from the color change and spool capacity rings it is the exact same as the old penn Baja special and all internal parts are the same. It has a star drag, metal frame, and metal spool and is supposed to be damn near indestructible so I have heard. I just picked one up and plan to put it to the test this summer paired with a ugly stick tiger lite rod. I have heard lots of great things about the reel, it is somewhat pricey at $249 but if it lasts it is worth it in my opinion.

I use the quantium Boca 80 & Cabo 80. Have had them both for 3 years now and are both going strong. We catch everything from grunts to AJ's with no issues.

we have a couple of diawa saltist 2 speed lever drags. We're really happy with them.

Spinning reels like the battles really are not designed for offshore bottom fishing. The higher end ones like Cabo 80s, Fin Nor Offshore Lethal 100s, saltigas, Saratogas and Stella's are. Hard to beat the old penn 113H and 114H, Daiwa Sealine 400H and 600H. Those can all be had used and won't break the bank.
New school there are any number of smaller lever drags but I like a star drag so the Penn Torque 25N with the 4.9:1 gears is my choice. Lot more $$$$ though.

I'm currently using a canyon hs18.
It's a hoss. Light, small and packs a lot of drag. I can put the breaks on just about anything. Complimented with 100 lb braid.
The only thing I didn't like was the transition from strike to full. Pushing that button was 1 too many steps. So, I used a die grinder and removed the metal stop on the lever, now it's right to full with one push.

I use a daiwa saltiest BG 35H. It's a small, light star drag with substantial drag and a narrow spool. Not the best thing out there but for $175ish, a good all around bottom reel.
Several friends use Saragoosa for spinning outfits and have had good luck with those. Either 18000 or 20000 size. I will be getting one soon.
I keep the 4/0's for guests and back ups. They work great but get heavy after a couple hours and have a slower retrieve.

Daiwa saltist spinning line is a great reel that want break the bank. Mine has handled it's fair share of abuse. If your looking for a spinning reel. I've got an okuma Cedros Cj 80 laying around I don't use.

Can't beat the Penn 113 and 114 but for kids and others who need a level wind I use the Penn GT 330 with 100lb braid. I've only burned one up. I have 3 that have been used for 5-6 yrs and I've only rinsed them and sprayed them with reel magic after each use. I've caught big AJ's and sharks with them.

For this type fishing I love my Shimano Trinidad 20. Been using it 5 years with no maintenance or upgrades. New its pricey; I traded it for some work I wasn't going to get paid for anyway. For big grouper I'm going with Capt Dave's suggestion; got my ass handed to me this summer on a charter using a similar reel (Daiwa) when a big one hit.

I have used Penn Battle 6000 and 7000, Penn Conflict 6000 with not a single problem. The Battles are probably 3-4 years old. The Conflict is a relatively new reel. I've used them for 2 summers. The sphere shaped handle makes them good for kids. i also use Quantum Cabo 60 without a single problem. We catch grouper, cobra, mani, trigger, bsb, vermilion, big drum, etc

X2. Can't get any better. My girlfriend likes a spinner though and uses an old Penn 6500 loaded with 60lb braid on a tigerlite rod. 10ft of mono on the end, swivel then chicken rig. She's caught plenty of big sharks and an occasional AJ on this rig and it's still working pretty good. My dad uses a Penn 340gti along with a fishwinch electric unit, 80lb braid with 10ft of mono on the end and a ribbon to keep him from winding the swivel and rig into the end of the rod, lol. He loves it being he's 81 years young and two hubcap triggers and 8 ounces of weight works him too hard.

I totally agree with Capt. Dave's recommendation to use the Penn 113H and 114H reels. I use them both and have never had a problem with them.
I also use the big Penn US made 330 and 340GTi level wind reels. These reels may not be quite as rugged as the Senators but they are great for the novice fisherperson. They really shine when you have more than one novice aboard.
