Question ! Is Fluorocarbon leaders a must while YF tuna fishing ? If so how long of leader and what lbs of leader . What is the best hook for YF tuna fishing , I'm using Sea Witches .

We run 12 feet of Fluoro on all of our rigged lures or skirted baits when not fishing for Wahoo. Each person has their own preference.

I caught a YF few weeks ago on my planer rod with #9 wire😂 but seriously if I was tuna fishing I typically just run floro on my sea witch rigs

YFT will hit anything, but your best bet is flourocarbon. Size depends on where you are fishing. For OBX tuna, we use 130# flouro and a 7/0 to 9/0 tuna hook (the barb is angled towards the shank).

What do you think? When tuna fishing with YF, should you use fluorocarbon leaders? What is the length and weight of the fluorocarbon leader? Currently I'm using Sea Witches for YF tuna fishing. What's the best hook to use?

Sneaky spambots in this case. Just looking for a way to post an ad.

When targeting Yellowfin specifically, I used to run 80lb fluoro. 30’ leaders. This was in SE NC when you could actually catch them down there. You would inevitably lose a few lures to wahoo but it was worth it

Not saying you “have” to, but we use it everyday. 80-130 lb depending on how skittish the fish are. We start out with about 18ft, that gives us enough effective length to use the same leader after re-crimping the swivel or hook ends (the stuff is expensive so we try to get as much use as possible). Just a couple tips with it though, try your best not to link it or put hard bends in it because now it will refract the light……. and check for nicks in it, remember your lips can feel way better than your fingers (yep run it through your lips). Tight lines and good luck.
