AUGUST TOURNEY SUPPORT FOR RFA

On Target With White Marlin, King Mackerel and Fluke

August 1, 2013 - August is tournament month for many East Coast and Gulf of Mexico anglers, and whether you're a Recreational Fishing Alliance (RFA) member who likes to fish close to the beach or out past the horizon, there's a chance for you to hit it big at weigh-in this month while also supporting your right to fish!

First up is the world's largest billfish tournament, the 40th Annual White Marlin Open, which kicks off with final registrations this Saturday and Sunday, August 3-4 from noon to 5 p.m. at Harbour Island Marina in Ocean City, MD. Following Sunday's captain's meeting at 7 p.m., fishing will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, August 5th as tournament participants can fish any three days, from August 5-9, with weigh-ins back at Harbour Island Marina each afternoon.

The 2012 White Marlin Open featured huge tuna, a Maryland State record shark, and a white marlin that earned top honors and $1.4 million in prize money. A total of 253 boats entered last year, with competitors from Florida to New England competing for more than $2.3 million in prize money for catches of white and blue marlin, tuna, wahoo, dolphin and shark.

Ocean City lived up to its title of "The White Marlin Capital of the World" in 2012 with 960 whites caught during the 39th annual event, with all but 8 released back into the ocean. This year's 40th annual White Marlin Open is sure to be another big event, with a portion of annual tournament proceeds going to the RFA to support our ongoing efforts to protect the rights of coastal anglers and businesses. Go to www.whitemarlinopen.com.

On August 9th, be sure to register for the 13th Annual Onslow Bay Open King Mackerel Tournament out of Swansboro, NC. A sanctioned Southern Kingfish Association (SKA) tournament, registration will be held from 5-9 p.m. at the Hampton Inn (food provide by Domino's Pizza) with the 7 p.m. captain's meeting held in honor of all past SKA National Champions from North Carolina.

Lines in the water at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 10th, with the tournament running until final weigh-in at 5:30 p.m. back at Caspers Drystack Marina in Swansboro. Awards will be held at the Hampton Inn on Route 24, where first prize (based on 100 boats) is more than $13 thousand. RFA member and active SKA support Capt. Stan "Stan Man" Jarusinski is running this 13th annual event, and he can be reached via the website at www.obokmt.us. To date, more than $227 thousand has been raised for various charities, and RFA is thankful for Capt. Stan's gracious support of RFA in recent years.

Heading to the north, the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh of the Jersey Shore will host their 6th Annual Fluke Tournament on August 17th, with $10,000 in prizes including a $4,500 top prize and $2,000 for second. As a special incentive, a special rod and reel package worth over $500 will be offered to the active RFA member who catches the largest single fluke of the tournament (Lamiglas IC70H with Abu Garcia Ambassadeur reel).

The Shillelagh has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years, with a huge tournament picnic held at the Shillelagh Club, 815 16th Avenue in Belmar, NJ on tournament day starting at 3 p.m. Captain's meeting is Friday, August 16th starting at 6:30 p.m. at the club. You can update your RFA membership in advance, or renew at the captain's meeting while you're getting your Calcutta sign-ups in place - after all, you don't want to miss out on the RFA members only exclusive rod & reel combo when you bring that doormat back to port. Download a tournament application at www.fsosbelmar.com/media/flukeapplication13.pdf.

For anglers in the Gulf of Mexico, be sure to join fellow members of the RFA's Forgotten Coast chapter at the 17th Annual Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association Kingfish Tournament. The tournament will be held on Saturday, August 24 in Mexico Beach, Florida from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. CST.

There will be Registration and the Captains' Party on Friday night at the Veteran's Memorial Park in Beacon Hill (just East of Mexico Beach on the North Side of Hwy 98) beginning at 5 pm on Friday, August 23, with food and drinks served until 7 p.m. which is when door prizes will be given out.

All proceeds will be used to support the artificial reef building efforts in the region, which in turn provides more fishing opportunities along the Forgotten Coast! RFA-FC chairman Capt. Tom Adams will be on-hand at the event, as will RFA board member Jamie Wilkinson and RFA corporate relations director Gary Caputi. Sign up for RFA membership at the MBARA event and get a free 'U.S. made' RFA red snapper t-shirt to boot!

To register for the tournament, go to www.mbara.org/tournament-registration.cfm.

Remember, fish hard, win big & support your right to fish with the RFA!
