Alright folks, I need some help. I am looking forward to purchasing a skiff in the near future. I need all available input so I don't look like a rookie in front of the salesperson. I am looking for a skiff that I would use around the bays and possible go out a few miles when its calm out. Should I look for a specific type (ie Carolina Skiff, Southern Skimmer, Jones Brothers), also what type of motor (Suzuki or Yamaha, Mercury). Should I buy new or used? Any info would be appreciated!

Any of the boats you mentioned will probably be ok.... the larger the better.... especially offshore. Bear in mind they weren't made for rough water. As for engines... I'd go four-stroke. I have 140hp Suzukis and so far, I really like them. Suzuki has a very strong sales presence in extreme SE coastal NC... so most of the "lack of dealership/service" worries you'll hear about aren't much of a problem.

Chose your dealer carefully.... that might be more important than the brand of boat.
