Hey all,

Looking to invest in a bottom fishing setup with a spinning reel. What would you guys recommend and what size reel and rod?
I have a conventional setup that I'm going to make my grouper rod.

If your around Morehead go by EJW, Chasin Tales, or Neuse, they'll be glad to set you up with something nice.

I'm up north so a long ways away. I bought my conventional setup in Murrell's Inlet when I was on vacation from one of the local shops.

I have several 8500 Diawa BGs
one on an Okuma Cerdos 6'6" that was clearance for 20 bucks at an expo
and one on a Carnage Jig Rod
One on a Rampage Jig Rod

I was leaning towards the BG. For a rod for baited bottom fishing should I look for a jigging rod or something else? What kind of action?
I don't want to get something that's not rugged enough.

really not a fan of the spinners when you're gonna be mostly fishing with 8oz+ big sinkers - they don't generate the same torque as a conventional and you end up having to pump and wind even the smallest game instead of an easy point the rod down and crank with the conventional.

for jigging or any casting opportunities - spinners are great -- but i wouldn't use a spin jig combo for any bottom fishing

I do agree with that however in my limited experience, I'm thinking it would be easier to switch out a bottom rig for a drift rig if something good swam by like a cobia to pitch too.

Obviously you never had the right setup. We do like the conventional for getting grouper up. But most clients prefer spinning gear for bottom fishing. And 8oz is used more than any other weight.

For a great spinning bottom rig. Look at Florida Fishing Products reels 6000 and 8000. Both have 40 plus of drag the 8000 is like 49 lbs. Star makes some nice heavy rods that are light in weight. A less expensive rod is the Shamino trevala.

I use a Shimano Saragosa 10000 and love it, gives me what I need for power and great drag, I have it on a Tsunami trophy series rod line weight 50 to 100

Neither do I. A two piece is like going to a gunfight with a pocket knife.

PS - ebbtide, where are the teal? 🤫
